That ended up not happening as the game was delayed until Spring 2014, meaning that there was a big Watch Dogs shaped hole in both console’s launch libraries. Some have suggested that the new generation’s launch libraries didn’t have many stand out games and Ubisoft seems to think that if Watch Dogs had made it out the door on time, it would have been the best reviewed title.

Speaking to IGN, Laurent Detoc, Ubisoft’s North American president, explained his firm belief that Watch Dogs “would have been the best-rated game on next gen,” but continued by revealing that in the end Ubisoft wants to make the best game possible first and foremost. He iterated this by comparing Watch Dogs to the behemoth Grand Theft Auto series.

No publisher ever wants to delay a game with marketing rescheduling, extra work and fan disappointment all looming over its head if it decides to change the release date. Unsurprisingly though, Detoc justified that the delay was “in the best interest of the product,” but admitted that the decision caught more than just the fans by surprise too.

Fans have wanted to get their hands on Watch Dogs for a couple of years now, and it’s been what feels like a long wait for the game, but delays are not uncommon for Ubisoft titles outside of the annualized Assassin’s Creed franchise. It still doesn’t have a release date past the vague window of spring, although Detoc did tease gamers by saying that everyone can expect to see it:
