Though Ubisoft had initially claimed that both From Dust, the downloadable “god game” that recently hit Xbox Live and PC, and Driver: San Francisco would require a constant Internet connection on the PC, they have since changed their mind after what must have been some serious gamer backlash. According to Ubisoft, outcries from fans on forums and in comments have forced them to re-evaluate their decision, and moving forward, those games will not be DRM-locked....

There are, however, a few reasons why Ubisoft has yet to fall into the infamous territory of EA. In spite of all its flaws, the publisher promotes independent thought from within the company. This has often had a positive result, with the creation of games such as Child of Light and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. Although these games have not been as big a commercial success as Ubisoft’s flagship triple-A franchises, there has been critical acclaim and perhaps more importantly a sense of real originality from the independent productions of the publisher’s developers....

With Black Flag trading the iconic setting of the American Revolution for some high-seas swashbuckling, Ubisoft seems to know that the game may not attract the same anticipation as its predecessor. While the publisher remains optimistic, CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that sales are expected to drop from last year. Guillemot outlined the publisher’s projection in an investor conference call today, doing his best to maintain that while Black Flag may not match the sales numbers of last year’s AC3, the company isn’t ruling out the possibility that the game will be more of a hit with consumers than they expect....

According to Rosti, posting on Neogaf, Ubisoft filed an opposition to EA’s pending trademark on their Ghost logo in September of last year, but has now proceeded to file an official lawsuit. In the suit, Ubisoft claims that their Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon logo is being infringed upon by EA, whose Ghost logo is too similar to Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon logo. In the suit, Ubisoft claims that potential customers and fans will be confused by EA’s Ghost logo, as it’s “nearly identical to the Ghost Recon marks used and owned by Opposers [Ubisoft]....

This lawsuit follows a BBC interview with a Dutch hacker who goes by the handle J.V.L. In the initial interview the hacker admitted to distributing Rainbow Six: Siege cheats online. J.V.L. claimed that some players within the “top, top ranks” of Siege are using MizuSoft’s software and also said “if Ubisoft decides to come after you for copyright infringement, you’re in for a tough time” which ended up being not too far off the mark....

Now, just a short while before its recently announced March 2023 release window, Ubisoft has delayed the game again. Skull and Bones’ release now falls early in the 2023 and 2024 fiscal year, and a team of Ubisoft employees has been sent to the developer Ubisoft Singapore to help polish it. That’s a bad look for this game, and it’s tempered fan expectations after seeing 2022 gameplay footage reach an all-time low....

But this is also the team that gave us the much-improved Assassin’s Creed 2. We loved the game, and are collectively hoping that Ubisoft is setting a trend of improvement with each new game....

Ubisoft is evidently aware of the seriousness of its slate of recent controversies, with the company addressing the recent issues with a new message from the company’s CEO Yves Guillemot. Posted to the Ubisoft YouTube account, Guillemot spends the message’s four-minute runtime acknowledging the company’s recent mistakes and issues, promising that, going forward, Ubisoft will look to offer a more safe and inclusive environment for its workers and fans....

Transference, which will also be playable outside of VR, was introduced at E3 by Elijah Wood in a creepy trailer with a lot of live-action footage. Fans should be able to expect the final game to incorporate live-action visuals along with traditional game graphics, as Transference promises to “bridge the gap between movies and games.” While Transference is likely to utilize live-action footage in the final product, what’s unclear is if the people seen in the E3 2017 trailer will be featured in the game itself, besides Green Room actor Macon Blair....

Developers sometimes sponsor or get involved in these holidays, as BioWare does with N7 Day, and it seems Ubisoft wanted to celebrate Assassin’s Creed Day too.
