The elder Ball later released a more measured response:
ESPN’s Arash Markazi reported from Shanghai that LaVar Ball planned to hold a press conference Wednesday but was advised by counsel to cancel it.
LiAngelo Ball, a freshman guard, was one of three UCLA men’s basketball players arrested in Hangzhou, where the Bruins are preparing to play their season opener against Georgia Tech. Markazi reported the three are still being detained by Chinese police.
Chinese lawyers told Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel that Ball, Jalen Hill and Cody Riley could be sentenced to 3-10 years in prison if convicted on the charges. Additionally, William Nee, a researcher for Amnesty International, told Wetzel that suspects in China are regularly detained for a month or more before being indicted.
UCLA said it is “cooperating fully” with local authorities.
